Upcountry Maui Guidebook

Upcountry Maui is located far up on the slope of Haleakala on Maui. This region is not very well known to most of Maui’s visitors. When people think of Maui, they normally think about tropical beaches like the ones in West or South Maui. Upcountry Maui is the birthplace of Paniolos (Hawaiian Cowboys). They thrived on the rolling hills and wide open fields of Upcountry Maui. The communities here are found on the slopes of the Haleakala Mountain. The elevation makes the weather here cooler than the lower lying areas of the island. It also gives many upcountry properties excellent bicoastal views of the North and South Shores of Maui.

“Some of the properties of Upcountry Maui have some of the most amazing views that can be found anywhere on the island.”

– Jeremy Stice, Realtor (B)

Things to do in Upcountry Maui

Upcountry Maui may seem like a sleepy part of Maui but it actually has a lot of activities that visitors can enjoy. Being located on the slopes of Haleakala, Upcountry Maui has access to one of the most popular and unique activities on Maui. This is the Haleakala Downhill Bike Ride. This activity has 2 variations. There’s the sunrise tour and the daytime tour. The sunrise one starts as early as 2 AM. Guests are picked up at their hotels and brought to the top of Haleakala just in time to see the sunrise. They are then brought to the entrance of the park and they can then bike down the long and winding road going down Haleakala back towards the coast. The daytime tour is similar to the sunrise one. They only differ in the start time. There are also horseback riding tours, zip lines, and hiking trips that you can partake in when visiting Upcountry Maui.

Upcountry Maui Golf

If you are staying in Upcountry Maui and are looking for a place to play golf, your options are pretty limited. The region of Upcountry Maui only has one golf course. The Pukalani Country Club is the only golf course you will find Upcountry. The golf course is perfectly situated in Pukalani since the weather is dryer than the neighboring regions. On many days rain can still impede your game but it is not such a big problem since it is not extremely consistent. The factor that affects your game the most is the wind. Since it normally only gets windy in the afternoons, you will need to make sure every shot counts. Rains are more frequent during the winter months.
