Lahaina Harbor is one of the major harbors in Maui. It has a long history and is an important part of the island. Lahaina Harbor itself was constructed back in 1955.  However, it’s history goes further back when it was called the Port of Lahaina. Back then, Lahaina was still the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This was during the reign of King Kamehameha III. The port was an important destination for the whalers who hunted for sperm whales in the Pacific. Whale fat was used to make oil that was an important commodity. It was used as fuel for lamps and for the Lahaina Lighthouse. Other parts of the whales were also used. Christian missionaries also lived in Lahaina during this time. The presence of these two groups in Lahaina often resulted in conflicts that at one time lead to the shelling of Lahaina Town. Lahaina Fort was constructed to mitigate these fights and to protect Lahaina town from attacks.
