Kaanapali Mountain Biking

The mountains and hills above Kaanapali are an ideal place to do some Kaanapali Mountain Biking in. If you are a beginner or an advanced rider you will be able to find terrain to suit your skills. However, let it be known that the hills of Kaanapali are not ideal for shuttling or doing downhill runs only. If you want to ride down a hill in Kaanapali you’re going to have to ride up it first. So be prepared for that.

Where is the best place to get a bike?

There are some bike rentals in the town of Lahaina, there are also some great shops on the other side of the island. The town of Makawao has recently had some major mountain bike trail building in the Makawao forest preserve. In addition to the forest preserve, there is also another bike park just outside of town that is called the “Bike Park Maui”. If you are looking to ride in Makawao you can rent the bikes there by the day or by the week and then you can use the bike rack that is included with the rentals to take your bike wherever you want. So if you decide that you want to drive up to the summit of Haleakala to try out the Skyline Trail or cruise out to the Kaanapali trail system to get a ride in you can.

Kaanapali Mountain Biking Tips

  1. The first thing you need to make sure you do is to STAY HYDRATED. Maui is a very hot place and if you are not careful it is easy to become very dehydrated when you’re doing outside activities.
  2. Be prepared for flat tires. The trails on Maui have plenty of thorns and exposed rocks which make flat tires very common. Expect to get at least one flat tire during your ride if not more. Make sure you have a mini pump and a spare tube or two to avoid having any long walks back to the trailhead.
  3. Don’t crash! The terrain on Maui is very unforgiving. Maui is essentially made of one large rock that is covered in topsoil ranging from a few inches to a few feet deep. Immovable rocks protruding from the ground are very common. The rocks are generally porous and sharp. If you find one of these during a fall you can easily get very injured. As a rule of thumb, the trails of Maui are very unforgiving so make sure to stay in control and ride within your abilities to avoid any unpleasant incidents.

If you are a Mountain Bike enthusiast and you are coming out to Kaanapali do yourself a favor and set aside some time for a ride when you’re here. The views are amazing and the trails are fun. You’ll be happy you did later.
