Are you a cliff jumping enthusiast? If so, you’re in luck if you are coming to the Kaanapali area! There are two very popular Kaanapali cliff jumping locations that are located on Kaanapali’s black rock, which is the home of the Maui Sheraton Hotel. On the north side of the rock there is a larger jump (approximately 40 feet) and then on the south side, there is a more popular jumping area that is not quite as tall. There are multiple spots you can jump from, with the tallest being about 25 feet.

If you are not a cliff jumper yourself but would like to see others show off their skills you can go down there on most days and see people climbing and jumping off the rocks. It is common to see people competing and showing off their skills here. If you go down there at sunset time you might get lucky enough to see the torch lighting ceremony for the Sheraton Luau. This is a reenactment of the famous cliff jump by Chief Kahekili. Black Rock is a special place in Maui. It was considered one of the three Leina or portal to the ancestral realm. People actively avoided jumping here since this is where they believe the departed jump to get to the afterworld.

A word of caution. Cliff jumping is something that can cause SERIOUS INJURY. This should not be attempted by the uninitiated. Please be aware that jumping off rocks into the ocean is an inherently dangerous activity. Extreme caution should be used if you decide to partake in any kind of cliff jumping. It is always best to take your time in deciding if you want to join the cliff jumping activities here. Always check the state of the ocean and the wind before you leap.
