Makawao is known for its rich history with Paniolos. These Hawaiian cowboys thrived on the big open fields of Upcountry Maui. If you would like to try being in their shoes then you can join the Horseback Tours in Makawao. The Horseback Tours in Makawao are with the Piiholo Ranch. This ranch has been managed by seven generations of one of Maui’s preeminent ranching families. The ranch was established by Henry Perrine Baldwin in 1876. It has since been passed down to his family. Being located 2,000 feet above the ocean, the ranch is perfect for horseback riding tours since the vistas here are excellent. You can have a private ride. You will be given a tour of the ranch and go through open pastures, Eucalyptus Forests, and venture to Piiholo Hill & Reservoir. Afterwards, you will be invited to the secluded Private Baldwin Family Cabin for a picnic lunch.

If you want a more immersive experience, you can try their Cowboy for a Day tour. This tour will give you a chance to be a paniolo and teach you different things related to ranch life like how to herd cattle. This ride will take you through lush green pastures and fragrant eucalyptus forests with plenty of open space. Cattles need to be moved to a new pasture every once in a while. After they have been grazing on one spot for some time, they will need to be rounded up and brought to a new pasture. After the cattle work, you will then head back to the ranch headquarters and sit down for a nice picnic lunch in their pavilion.

Here is a list of the different options for Horseback Tours in Makawao.
