There are no Makawao beaches because the town sits up on the hill at about 2000 feet of elevation. However, about 15 minutes away just down the hill on Baldwin avenue you will find some nice beaches around the town of Paia. You should be wary of weather and high surf when visiting the Paia beaches, especially during the winter time. If you are not a strong swimmer, or the weather is not looking ideal you may even want to head over to the south side of the island.

The beaches in Kihei are about 45 minutes away and are the next best thing if the beaches of the north shore are out of the question. If you do decide to visit the beaches in Kihei it is recommended to get an early start to beat the wind.

There are some worthy substitutes for recreational areas that can help to compensate for the lack of Makawao beaches. The Makawao forest reserve is Maui’s prime destination for mountain biking and is one of the islands great hikes.
