KIHEI BEACHES

The Kihei beaches are some of the nicest on the island (at least during the mornings). The sand on this side of the island is golden white and the coastline is made up of miles of beautiful beaches. However, something that you NEED to know if you are planning on visiting the beaches in Kihei is that there are very consistent afternoon tradewinds that come through this area. They normally start between 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM and continue until around 4:00 PM. The winds are strong and they are funneled through the central valley of Maui and hit the Kihei beaches at a perpendicular angle. This side shore direction has a tendency to actually pick up the sand and blast it at the beaches visitors. When the winds are up sunbathing is rather painful but you can normally get away with a nice afternoon beach walk if you want to. Most of the visitors of the Kihei beaches will use the beaches in the morning or the afternoon.
